Candidiasis (cutaneous and mucosal)

A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise candidiasis (cutaneous and mucosal) — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.

Key high-yield points

  • Cutaneous candidiasis - erythematous, moist rash with ragged peeling edge; satellite lesions (pustules beyond rash margin) are the hallmark
  • Oral candidiasis (thrush) - creamy-white plaques on buccal mucosa/tongue/palate that wipe off, leaving erythematous base
  • Vulvovaginal candidiasis - vulval pruritus, erythema, thick cottage-cheese-like discharge

Candidal oral plaques wipe off easily, leaving a red raw base. Leukoplakia cannot be wiped off and carries premalignant potential - never miss it.
