Urticaria and angioedema

A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise urticaria and angioedema — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.

Key high-yield points

  • Urticaria - superficial dermal weal (pale/red swelling) with surrounding erythema flare, intense pruritus, individual lesions resolve within 24 hours
  • Angioedema - deep dermal/subcutaneous swelling, less itchy, potentially life-threatening if laryngeal
  • Laryngeal angioedema - stridor, hoarseness, dysphagia = airway emergency

If lesions persist >24 hours, are painful, non-blanching, and leave pigmentation - consider vasculitic urticaria, not simple urticaria.
