- Most common tumour of the cerebellopontine angle (CPA) - 80-90% of CPA masses
- Vast majority: sporadic, unilateral; bilateral = neurofibromatosis type 2 (NF2) - autosomal dominant, chromosome 22 (merlin gene)
- Peak incidence: fifth and sixth decades; slight female predominance
