  • Encephalitis = inflammation of the brain parenchyma. Defining feature is altered cerebral function (consciousness, behaviour, cognition) - this distinguishes it from meningitis, where cerebral function is normal.

Do NOT wait for CSF PCR results before starting aciclovir. Treat empirically on clinical suspicion - delay worsens outcome in HSV encephalitis.
