  • Parasitic infection transmitted by female Anopheles mosquito; predominantly imported in the UK (~1,500-2,000 cases/year)
  • P. falciparum - responsible for vast majority of severe disease and death; can progress to coma/death within hours
  • VFR travellers (visiting friends and relatives) are highest-risk - often forgo chemoprophylaxis and underestimate exposure

Exclude malaria in any child with fever within 12 months of return from an endemic area. It is a medical emergency - do not wait for investigations before initiating senior review.
