Plain radiography (X-ray)
A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise plain radiography (x-ray) — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.
Key high-yield points
- A plain radiograph is a summation image - all structures in the beam's path are superimposed. Structures absorbing more X-rays appear white (radio-opaque); those absorbing fewer appear black (radiolucent).
- Silhouette sign - two adjacent structures of the same density obliterate each other's border; loss of a normally visible border localises pathology
- Right heart border loss = right middle lobe; left heart border loss = lingula; diaphragm border loss = lower lobe
