  • Toxoplasma gondii - obligate intracellular protozoan; cat is definitive host
  • Causes disease in three key groups: immunocompromised (especially HIV with CD4 <100), congenital infection, and rarely immunocompetent primary infection
  • Transmission: undercooked meat (tissue cysts), cat faeces/contaminated soil (oocysts), vertical (primary maternal infection during pregnancy)
