Transient ischaemic attacks
A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise transient ischaemic attacks — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.
Key high-yield points
- TIA = focal neurological deficit resolving within 24 hours, without infarction on imaging - same mechanisms as ischaemic stroke but perfusion restored before irreversible neuronal death
- Crescendo TIA - two or more TIAs within one week; very high short-term stroke risk, treat with same urgency as acute stroke
Do NOT diagnose TIA if there was loss of consciousness or a convulsion - these point to seizure (Todd's paresis) or syncope. A TIA does not cause unconsciousness.
