Key high-yield points

  • Alpha-thalassaemia results from deletions of alpha-globin genes on chromosome 16 (normal = 4 genes, αα/αα), causing reduced alpha-chain production, microcytic hypochromic anaemia, and accumulation of abnormal haemoglobin tetramers. Most common in South-East Asian, South Asian, and African populations.
