  • Offered to all boys and girls aged 12-13 (school year 8) as part of the NHS routine immunisation schedule
  • Vaccine used in UK: Gardasil 9 - protects against HPV types 6, 11, 16, 18, 31, 33, 45, 52, 58
  • HPV 16 & 18 cause ~70% of cervical cancers; HPV 6 & 11 cause ~90% of genital warts
  • Boys included since 2019 - also protects against oropharyngeal, anal, vulval, vaginal, and penile HPV-related cancers
  • Most effective before first sexual contact; catch-up programme available for older adolescents

Vaccination does NOT replace cervical screening - no vaccine covers all oncogenic HPV types.
