  • Septic shock = sepsis with circulatory, cellular, and metabolic abnormalities severe enough to substantially increase mortality. All three criteria must be present (Sepsis-3):
  • Confirmed or suspected infection
  • Vasopressor requirement to maintain MAP ≥65 mmHg
  • Serum lactate >2 mmol/L despite adequate fluid resuscitation

This combination carries >40% hospital mortality.
