Haemophilia A
A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise haemophilia a — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.
Key high-yield points
- X-linked recessive deficiency of factor VIII - affects ~1 in 5,000 males; ~4x more common than haemophilia B
- Factor VIII is a cofactor in the intrinsic pathway - forms tenase complex with factor IXa to amplify factor X activation; deficiency → impaired thrombin generation → fragile fibrin clot
- Primary haemostasis (platelet plug) is intact - deep bleeding occurs because the secondary fibrin clot fails
