Metabolic alkalosis

A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise metabolic alkalosis — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.

Key high-yield points

  • Metabolic alkalosis = primary rise in HCO3- shifting pH >7.45. The exam question here tests recognition that DKA produces metabolic acidosis with a HIGH anion gap - the opposite picture to metabolic alkalosis.

DKA causes metabolic acidosis with increased anion gap (not metabolic alkalosis). pH <7.35, low HCO3-, high anion gap - the classic trap question.
