Oral candidiasis (thrush)

Key high-yield points

  • White plaques - curd-like, on buccal mucosa/tongue/palate; wipe off to reveal red/bleeding base
  • Soreness/burning of mouth or tongue
  • Difficulty feeding in neonates/infants
  • Angular cheilitis - fissuring and redness at angles of mouth

Oral thrush plaques CAN be wiped off with a spatula (revealing erythematous base). Leukoplakia plaques CANNOT be removed and carry malignant transformation risk - refer if plaques cannot be rubbed away.
