- Caused by human papillomavirus (HPV) - a non-enveloped dsDNA virus
- Plantar warts: HPV types 1, 2, 4
- Genital warts: HPV types 6 & 11 (responsible for ~90% of cases)
- High-risk oncogenic types: 16 & 18 (cervical/oropharyngeal carcinoma) - distinct from plantar or genital wart types
HPV 6 & 11 = genital warts; HPV 16 & 18 = oncogenic (cervical cancer); HPV 1, 2, 4 = plantar warts. These are a recurring exam distinction.
