- Psittacosis is a zoonotic atypical pneumonia caused by Chlamydia psittaci, an obligate intracellular Gram-negative bacterium transmitted by inhalation of dried aerosols from infected bird faeces, feathers, or secretions. Any bird species can transmit it (hence ornithosis).
