Key high-yield points

  • Foetal blood vessels run within fetal membranes across or within 2 cm of the internal cervical os, unprotected by placental tissue or Wharton's jelly. Rupture of membranes tears these vessels, causing purely foetal haemorrhage - lethal given a neonate's total blood volume of only ~250-300 mL.
