- Second most common cause of dementia in the UK (~15-20% of cases) after Alzheimer's disease
- Caused by cerebrovascular disease (ischaemic or haemorrhagic injury) - white matter predominantly affected (vs cortical grey matter in Alzheimer's)
- CADASIL - most important genetic cause; *NOTCH3* mutation, autosomal dominant, young-onset VaD with recurrent strokes and migraine with aura
