Anaplastic thyroid carcinoma
A free high-yield preview for the UKMLA Applied Knowledge Test. Below are the key points to recognise anaplastic thyroid carcinoma — the full SA Note notes add investigations, management, complications and 10 practice questions.
Key high-yield points
- Less than 1% of all thyroid cancers - but one of the most lethal solid tumours
- Predominantly affects patients over 60 years of age
- All ATC is classified as AJCC Stage IV at diagnosis - there is no Stage I-III
The exam uses ATC as the contrast to papillary thyroid cancer: young woman + lymph node spread + excellent prognosis = papillary; elderly patient + rapidly enlarging hard neck mass + pressure symptoms + very poor prognosis = ATC.
